About Us |
a passage conspicuous for brilliance or effectiveness in a context that is dull, commonplace,
or uninspired
In a world where big in business has ceased to have even the beauty of scale, we hope to provide an eclectic outlet for the individual expression of new or re-formed ideas and concepts, of no particular kind but principally musical and literary, and for the revival of old or declining forms of expression. However we see no reason to be constrained and shall follow where fate leads.
Our choice of the records and the music we publish is largely a matter of chance and idiosyncratic selection, limited by modest resources and our own prejudices.
And if we find ourselves celebrating the dull, the commonplace or the uninspired, we hope they will at least effectively reveal themselves for what they are.
In a fit of self-obsession we have taken a reading on the I-Ching.

Where innocence is present, it is possible to tame.
The Taming Power of the Great.
Perseverance furthers.
Not eating at home brings good fortune.
It furthers one to cross the great water.
Heaven within the mountain:
The image of The Taming Power of the Great.
Thus the superior man acquaints himself with many sayings of antiquity
And many deeds of the past,
In order to strengthen his character thereby.
But then there is the moving second line, a 9:
The axle strap is taken away from carriage.
The strength of the restraint is such there is no conflict. There is complete submission, so that energy accumulates for a vigorous advance later on.
The movement of the second line gives rise to a second hexagram.
This website is, with fond memories and great affection, dedicated to Simon Jeffes who died in December 1998.
Purple Patch was set up by James Ware around fifteen years ago as a music publisher and administrator. Originally the principal catalogue administered was the catalogue of Simon Jeffes the writer, leader and musical director of the PENGUIN CAFÉ ORCHESTRA, for his company, Editions Penguin Café Limited. This catalogue is still administered by Purple Patch.
The other major catalogue administered by Purple Patch is a Latin catalogue, largely Cuban, for Termidor Music.
Purple Patch Records was set up in 2001 principally at this stage to release the cuban album SONORES DE VERDAD A BUENA VISTA: BARRIO DE LA HABANA and THE ASAG, an album of Sumerian myths.
